I interviewed Guard and Rifle Line member Kirsten Matthews, one of the Captains of the team.
Kirsten has been performing with our Guard since her freshman year, so she’s incredibly experienced and knows everything about it and the people like the back of her hand. This year is her last year with the Guard, so I decided to shine some light on her and her commitment to our team.
“Before I go on the field I get really anxious, because I know there will be many people in the stands watching me as I perform at halftime.”
Loving what you spend extreme amounts of time doing is so important. Spending all of that money and energy is a big commitment, especially as long as Kirsten has been doing it. Recognize the importance and impact of your interests!
“What color guard means to me is more than words can describe, I love it and everything about the sport. My love for it just keeps growing and growing as my high school years have continued. My freshman year I went into this sport not knowing anything about it, the only thing I knew was that it looked cool, and that they performed with the band. As time went on, my sophomore year I found it more interesting, and more of a hobby where I can express my emotions through my moves/choreography!”
It’s wonderful to have such a strong connection. As captain, Kirsten has a lot of responsibilities, especially considering the fact that this is her second year in this high position. Balancing solos, setting an example, representing/improving your team, pushing healthy leadership habits, and working equally with the other Color Guard captain Ryann Lopez can be an incredibly demanding task.
“As it progressed, I found it was something I was truly interested in. I did and still want to be the best. I like to push myself a lot when it comes to Color Guard because I want to be noticed, and to the highest of my abilities. I want to make something big out of this! The amazing friendships and bonds I have found within the sport is incredible, I wouldn’t change it for the world! My teammates and directors are the reason why I keep going, and why I push so hard. I’ve never met anyone who has believed in me more than they have. Due to these people, my love for this sport continues.”
Thank you Kirsten!
