In theatre, tech is the main pillar of the action. Lesser known than the acting class, Tech works backstage, not only teaching students how to paint for a professional set but also preparing them for a possible future career.
The main concept of the theatre tech classes changes depending on the level of class you’re in. In tech 1, you’re exploring the concepts of design, and how to make a theme or a concept that you or a director come up with. Once you get into tech 2 and 3, you use the knowledge that you gained in tech 1 to build actual creations, so set building and design, costume making and design, painting your designs, and bringing the designs made in tech 1 to life.
The theatre class is currently working on their school musical Mean Girls! Auditions were open to everyone in the school, no experience required. The students who auditioned for tech were sorted into groups based on their auditions. Mean Girls will be on November 8th at 7 pm, November 9th at 2 pm and 7 pm, and November 10th at 2 pm.
Varsity Theatre Tech goes to the UIL One Act play competition, and as a whole Mr. Jackson and Ms. Rohrman audition students: tech and acting to go to the Texas Thespians Festival, where schools from all over Texas come and bring their designs to qualify for nationals.
The theatre classes also have an Improv club! The Improv club is held every Thursday after school until 6 PM. Improv is a type of theatre where you are given a topic and you make things up about that topic on the spot. (This is typically done in groups)
Some really talented tech teams have gone on to study at TLU (Texas Lutheran University) for lighting design, stage management, playwriting, and digital media, with a past technician that attended SMHS working professionally for his AV and sound design, so even if the students aren’t directly working on something theatrical they’re still out there designing and changing the world of theatre!
