The San Marcos High School football varsity team has one a lot more games this year then the past years. It’s exciting to see the team move this far and advance as a team. You may be wondering: Why are they unstoppable this year? What makes them better as a team? The answer is they are able to have the “transfer” athletes able to play on varsity this year.
For the past three years, the transfers have not gotten to play on varsity, only on Junior Varsity. Many of the players who now make up the team’s skills had transferred into the district freshman year but were unable to play varsity due to University Interscholastic League (UIL) eligibility regulations. These rules are designed to ensure fairness and prevent recruiting violations, but they also meant that several skilled athletes had to wait until their senior year to contribute at the varsity level. This year, that waiting period is over and they are able to play.
These players have shaped the program into a great team, as well as the athletes who have natural skill. Now that they are cleared to play, San Marcos has better skill, speed, and leadership on both sides of the ball. The transfers have brought new energy to the team, helping elevate the overall level of play and setting higher expectations for performance.
Beyond the talent boost, this season’s success also reflects the chemistry and unity built over the past few years. The players who once watched from the sidelines are now leading by example, showing how perseverance and patience can lead to success. Coaches have also been instrumental in guiding the team through the transition, emphasizing teamwork and discipline as the foundation for sustained success.
The rattlers have made it to playoffs, the community has shown out to support them. The next team they play is Eagle pass; if they win, they play in Corpus Christi. The Advanced Journalism Students wish them a good luck as well as the community here at San Marcos High School.
Overall, San Marcos High School football has really improved as a united team and a lot of skill unfolded this season. These players have took the varsity team to new heights. As they head into the playoffs, the Rattlers aren’t just chasing wins — they’re making history.
